Austin Film Festival's Summer Film Camp
Austin Film Festival's Summer Film Camp provides campers with the venue, equipment, instruction, and team they need to create their very own short films and animations. Campers learn everything they need to know to comfortably get behind the camera and turn their ideas into real movies. Furthermore, they have the unique opportunity to see their films on the big screen (and walk the red carpet!) at the annual Summer Film Camp Showcase (Sunday, August 4). Students also participate in inspirational panel discussions at camp with visiting guest speakers, who in the past have included industry luminaries such as James V. Hart (writer, Hook), Rita Hsiao (writer, Toy Story 2), Robert Mark Kamen (writer, The Karate Kid), Justin Marks (writer, The Jungle Book), and Caroline Thompson (writer, The Nightmare Before Christmas).
We offer morning, afternoon, and day-long sessions every week from June 3 - July 26 (including the week of July 4). All of our camps meet daily, and most sessions are one week long.
We want campers to make the best films they can. That's why our professional instructors are hand-chosen to lead students through every part of the filmmaking process, from conception to final product. All instructors have backgrounds in both teaching and filmmaking so they can give campers the best guidance and support they need to truly shine.
At Summer Film Camp, we focus on two things: Storytelling and collaboration. We believe that for any budding artist, these are of utmost importance. By knowing how tell a story, campers can express themselves while practicing their developing filmmaking skills (be it directing, camera operating, sound recording, or editing). Collaboration is a challenging but necessary aspect of filmmaking, since every production is made up of many crew members playing different, but equally important roles.
